Lotus Reunion – Hethel 2025

Hethel, Norfolk. It’s where (most of) our cars were born and if you’re lucky enough to receive an invite to a gathering, you’d have to be barking mad to turn it down. Safe to say that I and a few others didn’t.

Every year (ish) there’s a Lotus Reunion. It’s invite-only and sees a good number of ex-Lotus employees catching up with one-another at the factory.

The Old Thorn Barn

You’re within a 15 minute walk to Hethel from this B&B but when there’s any kind of event on, it tends to be fully-booked very quickly. Danny is the chap who runs it and had started breakfast an hour earlier than usual knowing we were itching to get moving – we had to be at the factory before 9.

I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name but I did like the Honda R101 CU Candy Glory Red. I love a paint code

Barely finding 3rd gear we arrived at the factory and were quickly and efficiently ushered into a holding area where all the cars assembled and were ordered into the factory to be parked. Many of those who spent their evenings further afield arrived in convoy from Norwich. Car park photo by @markvholmes and convoy picture by @richardjarmy (thank you!).

Lidl car park – just as well it was an early start or I bet some owners would have been stuck in the middle aisle (you know who you are)

Hethel – Home

Cameras were allowed, but visitors were given clear instructions on what you could and could NOT take photos of. Comply or risk being escorted off-site and never invited again I should think. Good boy mode engaged.

Factory Tour

We were allowed to walk around the Chapman Production Centre – the new factory where the Emira is built. No photographs here due to obvious restrictions but it was quite a step up from the old place. Very impressive, very modern and very interesting. I want to know why they named the many stations dotted around the factory with an array of brushes “Shadow Board”. One day I will find out but you can discover this yourself if you book a factory and / or heritage tour from the Lotus website here https://www.lotuscars.com/en-GB/driving-academy/factory-tours

Gathering

As we get close to the end of the day, there’s a presentation to both ex-employees for the efforts in maintaining this event and also to owners for their cars. The Eclat concours was judged by the people who designed and built those cars – how’s that for high standards? Then there was the people’s choice for the Esprits and the winner, Matt Oxley’s silver S1, looked every inch worthy of the award. I’ll put that on the NYLOC Instagram page – soon but you can just see it in the background of the orange GT3 image which came second. Tony Shute and Nick Adams in the photo below – both are fascinating, engaging and highly listenable Lotus people.

Hometime

While the drone shot was being taken, plenty of owners turned their attention to the skies and not just for the photo – the clouds were gathering and turning darker. It wasn’t long before the heavens opened but by this time most of the day was done and we were thankful it hadn’t tipped it down earlier as some forecasts predicted. A great day, a long drive home for some but what an event to store in the memory banks. I and others are hugely grateful for this opportunity and I’d like to thank Simon Freebrey for the invitation. The End? (let’s hope not!).

And to finish, here’s the video made by Andy Betts (Bibs) from TLF – I met Andy back in 2011 and managed to have a quick chat with him on the day.

Jim Clark Trust Duns-23

This report was orginally published on the forum in June 2023

A brief report on a great weekend..

Myself and Mr Watson packed our tents and hit the road Friday morning. Once past Settle we hit some lovely roads on the way through Ribblehead, Buttertubs, Hawes, Brough and Middleton in Teesdale.

Like Border Reevers of old we raided Bellingham Co-op for beer and snacks and headed to our campsite on the Keilder Midgefarm.

After a rather wet evening we packed our soden gear and headed north up to Duns.
The Jim Clark Trust had kindly sorted out camping on a field next to the golf course about 1 mile from the venue.

Tents up and drying we headed to the Castle just as everyone else went home from the event.

No one seemed to know who’s job it was to throw us out so we had a lovely hour or so alone with some fantastic cars in an amazing venue.

After this it was over to Eyemouth to meet Rick, Steve, Martin, Alison & Ian for some rather spendid fish and chips on the harbour. Stopped at the Jim Clark Clock at Churnside on the way back to the campsite.

Sunday we packed up our dry tents and went to the golf club for showers and brilliant cooked breakfast. All camping should be on a golf course!

After that we headed back to the Castle but had to share the venue this time.
We got to hear a couple of cars fired up by Clive Chapman, Bob Dance and the team from CTL.

It was a fantastic weekend and could not of been any better. Then it pissed it down pretty much all the way home, cant have everything.

Euro Tour 2023

Each year, NYLOC goes on tour around Europe, often including a trackday. It started out as purely a trackday long weekend but has grown into a circa week-long tour of as far as we can stretch without overdoing things.

This year we did a trackday at Abbeville in the north of France and moved from there to Troyes then into the Vosges region, The Black Forest in Germany, Vianden in Luxembourg and the Wallonia region in Belgium.

With 10 cars in total, it was sensible to split into 2 groups. Let’s call them Team A and Team B…err…because we did. 😃

Trackday, Abbeville – France

Big thanks to Paul, Elise, Quentin and the team from Lotus on Track as we had a superb day here, along with superb weather.

Lac D’Orient – France

Strictly speaking, we’re not in Troyes but it’s near enough. Over to the west of the town there’s the Lac D’orient and we stayed one night here after a fair old leg following some good routes as well as motorway miles to get the distance done in decent time. We set off in 2 groups, a 5 and a 4 but the smaller group picked up one more car en route – Bill & Julie who’d been staying in Amiens over the weekend. Great day and we were rewarded with what could be described as not a bad view from the restaurant…

Eguisheim -France

Pronunciation: eh-geeze-hime. A few of us are no strangers to the Vosges region in France and after reading an article about a tour we decided to try Eguisheim for a stopover. Lovely old place, amazing architecture and a load of Alsace wine merchants.

Wolfach – Germany

We crossed the border into Germany and then up into the Black Forest. This gave us a good opportunity for some pics.

Vianden – Luxembourg

Continuing our journey, we crossed the border into Luxembourg, where we stayed in the charming town of Vianden. Famous for its magnificent castle perched atop a hill, Vianden is a postcard-worthy destination.

Bouillon – Belgium

Team A were heading back to Rotterdam while Team B were going home on Le Shuttle. This posed an issue in that staying anywhere within a short-ish distance of Calais means a rubbish drive for those on the ferry. So we planned it so we’d split for the last night and Bouillon was an easy drive from the last stop, Vianden.

On the way, Team A stopped off for a looksee at Spa – Lotus on Track were hosting Lotus Cup Europe along with some supporting races.

Tournai – Belgium

Team B finished their trip here and despite the dusty driveway (the cars were already filthy) the accommodation and food made for a welcome stop after a long slog through Belgium and a bit of France.

Thanks for making it this far. If you fancy joining us then please get in touch or just ask at one of the meetings.
